This original Star Trek series villain has much grander possibilities than that of a Q
By Chad Porto
Star Trek has a chance to balance the scales. When the crew invented Q, the wise-cracking, nearly god-like alien in the Next Generation, they created an alien with an unbeatable advantage. Truly, in the history of Q and the Q Continuum, the species only "lost" when they've allowed themselves to. They've acquiesced to the old and new Starfleet crews only when a point was made. Never before. There was no beating the Q, just appeasement.
The race has been so popular, thanks in part to Jonh de Lancie's fine acting, that fans have wanted to see more and more of the Q Continuum. Even high-profile actresses like Rosario Dawson want to be a Q. They're beyond popular, which is why so many people constantly look back at the Original Series with sincere wonder.
In the first season of The Original Series, Star Trek fans saw a creature named Trelane. A pre-Q-like alien, who made his debut in the 18th episode of the season, "The Squire of Gothos". In it, James Kirk and company meet an alien with a bizarre personality and unbelievable power. It's led many to believe that he may be another member of the Q.
That idea, however, is boring. Trelane being just another member of a near-unbeatable alien race reeks of poor storytelling. It's something you resort to when you're out of interesting ideas. Why not do more instead of just letting him be another random villain in the Continuum?
Why not make him an enemy of the Q? We've already seen them square off, to a degree, with the El-Aurians. So why not do it again, but this time with a foe that can match them move for the move? With so much of Star Trek not explored, the idea that there is more than one god-like being is more than possible. In fact, you can make it quadrant-based. With the Q serving as the overseers of the Alpha Quadrant, Trelane the Beta Quadrant, and then two more god-like beings in the Gamma and Delta Quadrants.
It may seem to power elements from K.A. Applegate's Animorphs series, but it worked for her. So why not do something similar here? It'd give the universe a unique and impressive wrinkle that fans may enjoy.
