Tig Notaro should have been more than just a cameo character on Star Trek: Discovery
Tig Notaro was recently added to the cast list for the upcoming new Star Trek series, Starfleet Academy, after having been on Star Trek: Discovery since its second season. This was a wise casting decision, and hopefully, this new series will use Notaro far more than she was utilized on Discovery. Although Notaro appeared in nineteen episodes of the series, most of those appearances were brief with the exception of her first and one in the fourth season.
Over the course of the next four seasons, Notaro's character, Commander Reno, would pop in with an occasional quip or help to resolve an issue but never for long even though she was a series regular for the fourth and fifth seasons. She was given a bit more to do in one episode of the fourth season when she was taken captive by the scientist Tarka, but so much more could have been done with her character, which I think would have been a great asset to Discovery.
A successful comedian, Notaro played to her strengths on Discovery and often provided the right dose of humor at the right time. With the darker edge to the storylines, the series could have used a little more lightness now and then. Discovery told some deep, intense stories, which were emotional and tense at times, and Notaro was perfect at breaking up that tension.
Hopefully, Notaro, who will be a series regular on Starfleet Academy, will be given more to do on the newest drama and won't just pop in now and again. I'm not expecting Starfleet Academy to have the same edginess Discovery did, but undoubtedly, it's still going to need someone there to break the ice when needed or to cut the tension. And that is Tig Notaro doing what she does best.
