Trek's Pets: all named and recurring pets in Star Trek
Number One - Picard's dog - Star Trek: Picard
Patrick Stewart is a fervent animal rights activist, and objected to Livingston's presence on the show, understandably believing that animals should not be ornaments. So when Patrick Stewart got a chance to revisit the character in Star Trek: Picard, he made sure to make his advocacy a part of the show.
Picard having a pet was Patrick Stewart's idea, saying "I thought all we need to do is to have a dog at Picard's side. And that, without any dialogue or any dramatic reference, will say a lot about this man, that he now has a dog always at his side,”
Pitbulls are a banned breed in Stewart's Native UK due to the belief that they're dangerous. Stewart advocates against the stereotyping of the breed, and fosters pit bulls in LA. Picard's dog, named Number One was played by a rescue dog named Dinero. As a rescue, Dinero had little acting experience and didn't appear in as many scenes as was planned. It seems poor Dinero was a very good boy, but not a very good actor
It's a shame that Number One wasn't onscreen more, as he was featured prominently in publicity. Picard was the second Star Trek show of the new era, the first after Discovery, and while Discovery wanted to do its own thing, Picard promised a return to the characters and settings we knew and loved. When Patrick Stewart tweeted a high-res image of the season one poster, and we saw the number one on Number One's dog tags, it really felt like Star Trek was finally back.
