Both Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Picard brought back Wesley Crusher, but there wasn't much time for viewers to see how being a Traveler had changed the once kid genius. Instead, it was a glimpse of a character who'd been missing for a long time. Star Trek: Prodigy corrected that by not only bringing Wesley back, but by giving Wil Wheaton more screen time than he'd seen in a long time. They gave him a story, a sense of purpose, and even set up what could very well be a potential for yet another Star Trek spinoff. And according to an interview with CinemaBlend, Wheaton is intrigued by the idea.

Prodigy was the first series to revolve around a set of characters not in Starfleet so there's already a precedent set for a non-Starfleet officer leading a Trek series. Wheaton himself likes stories that are set in the Trek universe but don't take place inside Starfleet. He asks the same questions many of us fans have asked over the years.

"What is this universe that Starfleet is kind of like looking after? What goes on on these planets before and after the Federation shows up?"

This opens up a world of possibilities that could bring alien worlds to the forefront of Star Trek, but is it something that fans would be open to? I certainly think having Wesley back to travel the world in a different manner, trying to stay hands-off yet needing to help, would be a unique take on a Trek series. And it would pick up where Prodigy left off, by showing that Wesley made the right decision when he left Starfleet Academy to become a Traveler.

Wheaton, like most of us, knows that anything is possible when it comes to this franchise and is willing to explore those possibilities if given the opportunity.

"If they wanted to explore it. Yeah, I'm super into it."
