Will any new Star Trek cover the missing centuries before Star Trek: Discovery season three?
At the end of season two of Star Trek: Discovery, the crew were forced to jump ahead in time to the 32nd century. From that point forward, the series was set almost nine hundred years ahead of previous Star Trek series and movies. Discovery wrapped its final season this year, and the next series coming up is Starfleet Academy, which will also be set in the 32nd century.
The Section 31 movie, which stars Michelle Yeoh, won't be set in the later century because Philippa Georgiou's body couldn't remain without killing her. So she was sent back in time, but we don't know exactly how far back she went. Recently, Paramount announced a new comedy series by Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien that will be set in the 25th century. So, naturally, all of this begs the question: will Star Trek eventually cover the 26th-31st centuries?
Star Trek: Picard ended in the 25th century in the year 2401, but that leaves a lot of time unexplored before Discovery jumped ahead into the 32nd century. While it's great to see the advancements that were made, there is a vast world that we still haven't seen, and many of us fans want to explore those centuries.
In order to venture into those centuries, though, Paramount would have to greenlight a series that can't be Star Trek: Legacy as it will be set in the 24th century. I, for one, would love to see how various alien life has grown since Captain Seven of Nine took command of the new Enterprise. There is so much to cover and so much more to learn.
Yes, Star Trek: Discovery has established some canon for the future of Star Trek, but there is a vast amount of time still left to be discovered. As much as the 32nd century is amazing, it would be just as amazing to see some of those technologies as they're being created. What happens to the crew from The Next Generation? Where did the crew from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine end up?
Some of the species of aliens in Star Trek have long life spans and could still be seen in later centuries so there would still be a link to the earlier Treks. It would just be a shame to skip over centuries of new technology, newly discovered aliens, and the futures of the heroes that have been a part of the Trek landscape.
