Production designer Dave Blass shares two of the best iconic moments he helped create
Star Trek is filled with some of the greatest moments in television and film history. Whether it was Captain William Riker [Jonathan Frakes] showing up on the USS Zheng He to assist his friend, Admiral Picard [Patrick Stewart] in Star Trek: Picard, the moment where Captain Kirk [William Shatner] has to turn his back on the woman he loves in The City on the Edge of Forever, or when Admiral Kirk realizes the Klingons have killed his son David on Star Trek IIl: The Search for Spock.
The settings, the actors, the lighting, and the writing all come together to form these outstanding minutes that no Star Trek fan can ever (or wants to ever) forget. Most recently, we had two such scenes, one aboard the new USS Enterprise with Admiral Picard and the former crew of The Next Generation. It was a poignant stamp in time where everyone is back together on the ship that started their journey. The next scene just happened in Roddenberry Archives "Unification" short which reunited Shatner's Kirk and Leonard Nimoy's Spock for a final, silent goodbye, something we'd never gotten onscreen before.
Emmy-nominated production designer Dave Blass had a hand in both of those moments, and he shared his happiness at being able to help bring those to life.
Blass referred to himself as a "lifelong Star Trek fan" and asked fans to imagine what it was like being able to bring these two moments to life. In all honesty, most of us can't imagine what that would be like. The fulfillment of a dream is often indescribable to those on the outside looking in. But, as fans, we enjoy the beauty of these moments these talented creators bring to us and hope there are many more waiting for us down the road.
