Set in the 32nd century as a spin-off from Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be a series departure from the usual Star Trek canon that follows the adventures of a Federation starship and its captain and crew rather than the faculty and young cadets of Earth’s Starfleet Academy. With Helen Hunt cast as the Academy's captain and chancellor, it will be the third time a Star Trek series is led by a female captain, following Kate Mulgrew's Captain Kathyrn Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager and Sonequa Martin-Green’s Captain Michael Burnham of Star Trek: Discovery.

Holly Hunter is the only Academy Award winner (The Piano) in an acting category to be cast as the lead in a prime-time Star Trek series. Of course, there have been several Oscar winners to be cast in supportive Star Trek series roles, who have won the golden statue, such as Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost), F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus), and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

Holly Hunter brings experience and depth to the role

The BAFTA award winner is an accomplished character actor who will bring experience, depth, and creativity to the captain/chancellor role in Academy. In a Variety interview, showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau gave Hunter the highest of praise, saying:

“To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor…leading the charge on Starfleet Academy is a gift to all of us and the enduring legacy of Star Trek."

In the 32nd Century, the Federation will be in a rebuilding phase as a result of a devastating 31st century event called "The Burn" which caused dilithium (the energy source of warp drive technology) to become unstable and explode – destroying most of Starfleet and the Federation.  Holly's character will be at the forefront of that rebuilding process, ushering in a new generation of Starfleet cadets into the Federation as doctors, scientists, engineers, communication and security officers, and more.

Holly has been known for her no-nonsense authoritative persona in films for decades, including her retro-futurist voiceover role as Helen Parr (Elastigirl) in Disney’s animated movies, Incredibles and Incredibles 2. This tiger mom will stop at nothing to protect her family and save the world from the menace of villains wreaking havoc across the town of Metroville.

Tiger-mom aside, I suspect the Golden Globe winner will portray her captain/chancellor role in Academy more aligned with her role as Rhea Jarrell in season 2 of HBO's Succession. In Succession, Rhea was a brilliant strategist on a calculated mission to broker a deal between two media mogul families, the Logan family of Waystar Royco and the Pierce family of Pierce Global Medial. Holly's performance as Rhea was nuanced with depth of character and you never really quite knew what she’d do next to accomplish her goals.

Starfleet Academy's antagonist to Holly's protagonist will be great television

Star Trek creators have also wisely brought on board the famed character actor and Emmy winner Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) as a villain of some sort in Academy. Giamatti has portrayed some icon villains in his career: (as Limbo in Planet of the Apes – 2001, Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man – 2014, and Chuck Rhoades in the TV series Billions – 2016 to 2023) to name a few. Given Giamatti's range and Holly's talent, I am expecting some sizzling must-see TV between when these titans battle it out in a clash of wills in the backdrop of Starfleet rebuilding the Federation in the 32nd century.

If the main cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is any indication as to how likely compelling this new kind of Star Trek storytelling will be, it certainly evident that season 2 has been greenlit prior to the release of season 1. I look forward to Hunter's interpretation of a 32nd century Starfleet captain/chancellor and how she and the Federation plan to revitalize and reinvent (after "The Burn") Starfleet's place in the influence of space exploration in the Alpha Quadrant and beyond!
