“I was privileged to be a part of that original vision.”

Star Trek writer David Gerrold joins a who’s who of talent for IDW Publishing’s upcoming 60th anniversary comic book to celebrate the franchise’s incredible milestone. Gerrold, who contributed to three classic TOS episodes (“I, Mudd,” “The Trouble with Tribbles,” “The Cloud Minders”) lends his skills to the nearly 70-page anthology coming out this fall.

“The reason why Star Trek has been an enduring part of our culture is that at its heart Star Trek has never been about finding enemies to defeat,” Gerrold said (per The Hollywood Reporter). “It was always about finding allies and friends against the vast darkness of the universe."

Gerrold continued by saying:

"I was privileged to be a part of that original vision. It was an amazing opportunity, and I made some of the best friends anyone could ever imagine. The chance to return to the Star Trek universe and write a new story, especially one that honors The Original Series, yes, it was a privilege.”

I was already excited about the anthology, but I nearly flipped out when I noticed that one of the variant covers features The Original Series’ Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) emerging from the Guardian of Forever time portal only to come face to face with Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) and younger Spock (Nimoy)!

The visionary creative mind behind Lower Decks, Mike McMahan, also contributes to the upcoming Star Trek comic book. And there is even a variant cover of the anthology that features both the animated versions of Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Boimler (Jack Quaid) critiquing their real-life counterparts from the hilarious Strange New Worlds episode, “Those Old Scientists” — Ransom’s version of TOS, if you’re a lower decker like me.

IDW’s 60th anniversary comic book, which will feature a total of seven stories, drops on Wednesday, Sept. 2, just days before TOS' “The Man Trap” first aired on NBC six decades ago. Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
