Check out the incredible artwork posted by the comic book's first-time writer.
Brian Michael Bendis is a lifelong Trekkie, who seized the opportunity to contribute a story to the upcoming Star Trek 60th anniversary comic book from IDW Publishing. And the first-time writer — yes, first-time writer — recently shared an extraordinary panel on Instagram. Drawn by artist Michael Gaydos, the artwork (below) features the incomparable George Takei’s Mr. Sulu wielding a sword in the upcoming project.
Bendis said of having the chance to write a story celebrating the science fiction universe he loves so much (per The Hollywood Reporter):
“I grew up in a house of Trekkies. I am married to a Trekkie. Years ago, in real life, George Takei was so kind to me and my family that I jumped at a chance to express my affection for all things Star Trek by cooking up a classic Trek, Sulu-focused story.”
Personally, as much as I love Hikaru Sulu, I’m much more interested to read the Star Trek: Lower Decks story featured in the collection, which is being written by the show’s talented creator, Mike McMahan. Mike and Laura Allred provide the artwork for this Lower Decks' installment.
IDW’s 60th anniversary Star Trek comic book was originally reported to feature a total of seven stories, but it appears there will be closer to 10 total adventures collected, some much shorter than others like “the Enterprise one-pager gag from writer-artist Chris Fenoglio.”
The Star Trek 60th anniversary anthology is slated to drop on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Do you plan on picking up a copy of the upcoming anthology? What did you think about the Mr. Sulu sneak peek? Share your thoughts and comments on the matter with us via the Redshirts Always Die Facebook and X pages.
Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
