13. 'The Conscience of the King'
“The Conscience of the King,” which aired December 8, 1966, sees Kirk encountering a mass murderer disguised as a travelling actor, who approaches Shakespearean territory.
Explicit references to Hamlet mark the episode and highlight its themes of theatricality, revenge and guilt. It also provides new insight into Kirk's past and the tragedy that shaped his sense of justice.
Even after 60 years, this is still one of the most underappreciated gems of early TOS. Those who are used to the phaser fights may be surprised by the slower pacing and emotional mood, but the tragic ending and moral ambiguity seem remarkably contemporary.
Whether a person can ever truly make amends for their sins, and whether society should allow them to, is as relevant today as it was in 1966. "The Conscience of the King" is an entertaining, character-driven diversion that you shouldn't hesitate to see on your anniversary watch.
