15. 'Shore Leave'
One of the oddest ideas ever put forth by the show came out on December 29, 1966, in "Shore Leave," which wrapped up Star Trek’s first calendar year.
References to Alice in Wonderland, surprise duels, old flames, it all comes up as the Enterprise gang beams down to a planet where thoughts become reality. What starts as a strange series of hallucinations becomes, in the end, a story about stress, relaxation, and the importance of play.
“Shore Leave” is a nice reminder that Star Trek can be flexible without compromising concepts even after 60 years. The episode makes the case that happiness, fantasy, and rest are needs, not luxuries, acknowledging the toll constant crisis takes on Starfleet officers.
It’s a fun palate cleanser for any anniversary marathon, with its odd images and light tone. As a high point of 1966, it’s a great way to see the crew simply… breathe.
