4. 'The Naked Time'
“The Naked Time” aired September 29, 1966, and soon proved that TOS could be about character exploring, which is at the core of this space virus story.
A strange illness reduces their inhibitions, and suddenly all the crew, from Sulu to Spock, have an opportunity to open up about their inner lives in ways that seem both theatrical and surprisingly intimate. This episode also sets up the time-travel slingshot technique that will be used in later episodes.
60 years later, this remains one of the most purely enjoyable hours of early Star Trek. Yes, it's campy, but in a way that allows the main players to demonstrate their versatility and exposes to the audience the emotional machinery that is normally concealed behind Starfleet discipline.
To this day, the audacious detour of Sulu and Spock’s attempt to control his feelings are still talked about in the franchise. For a 60th anniversary revisit, "The Naked Time" is fun and surprisingly insightful.
