9. 'Dagger of the Mind'
The Enterprise travels to a penal colony where an evil device of mind control is concealed in the guise of experimental psychotherapy.
"Dagger of the Mind" aired on November 3, 1966, and it’s a melancholy melange of gothic horror and institutional satire that deals with consent, rehabilitation, and power abuse. The Tantalus Colony is the prototype for future Trek stories of outwardly perfect establishments hiding something far worse.
The topics discussed in the presentation seem to be surprisingly relevant six decades later. "Dagger of the Mind" deals with the increasingly important issues of incarceration, medical ethics, and the line between therapy and violation, in a way that is surprisingly direct for network television in the 1960s.
The teaming of Kirk with psychiatrist Helen Noel gives the story tension and a glimpse into the captain’s private life, although the scenes with the neural neutralizer are still disturbing. It’s a bold reminder of the early Trek’s willingness to challenge established institutions on its anniversary return.
