Two Trek luminaries are scheduled to represent Gene Roddenberry’s beloved science fiction franchise.
Star Trek fans already had the opportunity to descend on two major United States’ cities later this year to celebrate creator Gene Roddenberry’s beloved science fiction franchise. ST-LV: Trek to Vegas will be held in August, while ST-PHI: Trek to Philadelphia follows in November.
However, Trekkies will be happy to know that the Italian Global Series (IGS) will also be honoring Trek’s 60th anniversary, too (per The Hollywood Reporter).
IGS will take place in two beautiful Italian locations this summer: the Adriatic coast town of Riccione and the neighboring city of Rimini. And a pair of Star Trek luminaries will be on hand as a part of the celebration abroad. Actress Jeri Ryan, who portrayed Seven of Nine in Voyager and Picard, will participate in a conversation discussing the importance of women as television role models in the sci-fi genre.
Plus, Nicholas Meyer will be on hand to take part in the IGS festivities as the President of the Limited Series Jury. I love Ryan, and I’m delighted she’ll be representing Star Trek in Italy. She is certainly a fan-favorite and well-known to all Trekkies around the world. However, for those newer fans who aren’t as familiar with the franchise, Meyer was instrumental with furthering the future of Trek.
While commercially successful, some critics and fans were less than enthusiastic about The Original Series cast’s first big-screen adventure, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). However, director Nicholas Meyer stepped in and took over on Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), which not only became a summer blockbuster, but it led the way to a string of successful movies.
Without that success, which originated from Meyer’s keen writing and direction, there wouldn’t be any need for the franchise to return to TV in the form of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987. Thus, there never would have been a (Rick) Berman Era and all that followed. In my opinion, Meyer deserves much of the credit for Trek’s enduring success, so I’m delighted he’ll be in Italy representing the brand at IGS.
IGS will take place across four festival locations in Rimini (The Agostiniani Complex, Castel Sismondo, the Cinema Fulgor, the Galli Theater) from Friday, July 3, until Monday, July 6, and then the festival returns again to Rimini for closing night on Saturday, July 11.
IGS will also be represented in Riccione at the PalaRiccione from Tuesday, July 7, through Friday, July 10. And admission to the series showcase is “free to the general public” (per THR). However, at the time of this writing, Ryan and Meyer's respective conversations haven't been scheduled for a specific day and time yet.

Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
