Alex Kurtzman is a controversial name for many Star Trek fans. The overseer of the Trek franchise for the last decade has been responsible for pushing things in new directions through numerous TV shows and films, but he’s also been the target of everything some fans feel is wrong about modern Star Trek.

It’d take too long to list all the complaints, but they include Kurtzman fiddling with Trek canon, putting a darker, almost dystopian spin on a franchise built on hope, and let’s not get into the debates over “woke” content.

But these complaints ignore that Kurtzman is a key reason Trek remains as strong as it does today. Fans sometimes forget that in the mid-2000s the franchise was stagnant, and Kurtzman became a driving force behind its expansion.

He has made his share of mistakes, but the hits do outweigh the failures, including several projects that fans cite as among the best Trek has ever produced. With that in mind, the following are 10 reasons Star Trek fans have to be thankful for Alex Kurtzman.
