As the first new Star Trek series in over a decade, Discovery hit the ground running. Thankfully, it did by giving us a stellar lead character in Michael Burnham. True, she had a rough start as fans didn’t like the whole “Spock’s adoptive sister we've never heard of” direction.

Her abrasive attitude and given leeway over her mistakes didn't help. However, thanks to both Alex Kurtzman’s creativity and Sonequa Martin-Green’s performance, Burnham found her way as a top Trek heroine.

Michael was dedicated, tough, not bowing to anyone, and her rougher edges were smoothed out for strong character development. She came to the fore in the later seasons when the show jumped a thousand years into the future and proved herself as a terrific heroine.

Michael Burnham was one of Kurtzman’s best contributions to Star Trek, which worked out well and the success paved the way for more Trek series.
