7. Star Trek: Prodigy

Sadly overlooked by many fans, Prodigy was another animated series with a unique approach to Star Trek. Designed for younger audiences, the adventures of a ragtag crew that stole the USS Protostar to escape slavery was quite an adult story.
It was fantastic hearing Kate Mulgrew voice both Hologram Janeway and Admiral Janeway. Heck, fans even got to watch the actress portray Mirror Janeway in season 2. Chakotay's (Robert Beltran) integral inclusion and The Doctor's (Robert Picardo) arrival in season 2 turned Prodigy into a must-see Voyager reunion.
Season 2 was more daring, with some unexpected turns, while retaining that hopeful vibe that some other shows lacked. Plus, the return of Wil Wheaton as a Traveler was definitely a triumph.
It was jarring to have Prodigy end after only two seasons despite all its potential. Still, this was a strong show from Alex Kurtzman, which expanded Star Trek further into animation, and he should be credited with trying to take a big swing for a new Trek audience.
