6. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Given the divisive reaction Starfleet Academy received, some fans may not be so cordial to Alex Kurtzman over it. It’s likely that time will be kinder to this show, which expands on the 32nd-century setting as the Federation rebuilds. Nevertheless, SFA is still a worthwhile feather in the co-showrunner's cap, which scored very well with critics on Rotten Tomatoes: "Certified Fresh" (85 percent).
Learning how the Klingons and other species have fared in this time provided a fantastic groundwork for storytelling. It also made sense to insert life lessons into a tale of youths learning and growing.
SFA didn't shy away from action and even deaths to rock the viewers and cadets alike. The characters were well written, and it was fabulous seeing the cast spark the scripts up. That’s especially true for Holly Hunter, Robert Picardo, and Paul Giamatti, who chewed every piece of scenery in sight.
The series didn’t get a fair chance with viewers, but its cancellation didn't stop Kurtzman, creator Gaia Violo, and the rest of the show's creative team from providing Trek fans with some new lore. After all, SFA will always be remembered for introducing the first gay Klingon and the first female Jem'Hadar, whether some fans like it or not.
