4. The Burn from Star Trek: Discovery

Season 3 of Discovery was the step forward both the show and the franchise needed. The prequel to TOS hadn’t quite taken off with fans, and it was creatively constrained by that continuity.
So jumping most of the crew nearly a thousand years in the future was a strong storytelling hook. But even better was the introduction of “The Burn,” the galaxy-wide disaster destroying warp drive and breaking the Federation.
No longer was this about the Federation in power, but instead struggling to survive with the Discovery crew's mission to fix The Burn and restore things. Sending the franchise so far in the future was a long-overdue move, freeing the writers to craft fresher tales on the galaxy and how much had changed.
The Burn was a restarting point for the franchise, giving Star Trek a blank slate to craft new tales, and the continuing effects promise to provide us with some compelling tales to come. Discovery's co-creator and co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman deserves much respect for creating The Burn.
