The documentary is free to watch through this streaming service.
Directors Timour Gregory and Sasha Schneider’s Beam Me Up, Sulu documentary dropped on digital earlier this year and is available on most video-on-demand platforms to rent ($5.99) or buy ($12.99). However, Star Trek fans who are interested in seeing the film now have a way to watch it absolutely free without paying on VOD. However, Trekkies will need access to their local college or public library.
Beam Me Up, Sulu is now available on Kanopy, which offers ad-free movies, television shows, documentaries, and more by partnering with universities and public libraries. And since those institutions cover the costs, Kanopy can offer viewers free access to their website and app. Here’s how it works (per Kanopy):
“You need to be a member of a participating library to start watching Kanopy. If you are a member of a participating public library, you can start watching by signing up with a valid public library card number and PIN/password. If you are a currently registered student or faculty member of a participating college university, you can start watching by signing up with a valid university login.”
If you’re not sure which colleges and libraries in your area offer Kanopy, you can check through the following service directory links: find your public library or find your university.
I think Kanopy is a great option for Star Trek fans to check out the movie documenting George Takei’s participation in the classic fan film, which the actor made in between the release of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) and The Voyage Home (1986).
Once Star Trek fans have their library card information, or their university login, signing up for Kanopy is easy and can be done by following this link. And for more Star Trek content, visit the Redshirts Always Die Facebook and X pages.
Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
