A villain with a thematic twist
Krall, played by Idris Elba, seems to be a violent warlord intent on destroying the Federation from his secret base on the planet Altamid. But as the mystery unfolds, the film also reveals his history as a Starfleet officer who resented war and desertion, showing him as a tragic mirror of what happens when humanity's higher principles are disregarded or lost.
This conceptual turn lends more heft to the climax than a traditional “stop the doomsday weapon” plot, by making the Federation not just a government but a hard-won ideal worth defending. It conforms nicely with the series’ recurring concern with how people react when their expectations for the future aren’t satisfied, a concern that remains relevant a decade later.
