“I love James Bond movies.”
Have you ever envisioned a particular Star Trek icon portraying a James Bond villain? Many acclaimed actors outside of the sci-fi franchise over the years have done just that, including Gert Frobe (Goldfinger), Christopher Lee (The Man with the Golden Gun), and Rami Malek (No Time to Die). Now, envision The Next Generation and Picard’s Brent Spiner mixing it up with 007 in the spy’s next adventure.
Spiner, who played one of the Star Trek franchise’s most beloved characters, Lt. Commander Data, would love to play a spoil to Bond on the big screen. Spiner said during a live stream of his and Trek co-star Jonathan Frakes podcast Dropping Names: “I always tell my friends the perfect Bond movie I have imagined in my head is Brent Spiner as the villain and Jonathan Frakes as director.”
“And who plays Bond?” Frakes asked.
“Well, anyone other than us,” Spiner answered before the two cohosts discussed when fellow Star Trek alum Idris Elba was once mentioned as a possibility to portray James Bond in a feature film. For those who are new to the fandom, Elba portrayed the villain, Krall, in the last Kelvin Timeline entry: Star Trek Beyond (2016). “But I love James Bond movies,” Spiner continued. “I’ve seen every one of them, even the bad ones, seen them all. And you know what? I would love to be a Bond villain."
In fact, Spiner and Frakes were discussing their admiration for fellow actor Javier Bardem during the live stream of their latest podcast live-stream, who happened to play one of the most memorable villains to grace the spy franchise, Silva, in arguably the best Bond movie of all time, Skyfall (Javier Bardem). It isn’t easy to steal scenes from Daniel Craig’s version of 007, but Bardem did just that in the must-see 2012 flick.
I think Spiner would make an excellent Bond baddie. Why? Remember how convincing the actor was as Data’s evil brother, Lore, in Star Trek: The Next Generation, or how ruthless Spiner came across as the devious Dr. Adam Soong in the second season of Picard? I know they haven’t even cast Bond yet, but a hero is only as good as their villain — and I think Spiner would be the logical choice.
