"I broke my finger, and it was fantastic."
Trekkies love how Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) always mixed it up in hand-to-hand combat on Star Trek: The Original Series, and, as it turns out, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy pays homage to the classic Trek fights of the past. Speaking at the CCA press conference, Giamatti spoke about mixing it up with co-star Sandro Rosta on the set of the upcoming streaming series. The Golden Globe-winning actor said of the epic fight scene between his Nus Braka and Rosta's Caleb Mir (via ScreenRant):
“They came to me and said, ‘So, we have this big fight.’ It was in the script, it was nothing, really. It was kind of like we kind of pushed each other around. That was it. And Alex [Kurtzman, the co-showrunner] said, ‘Now, that fight is gonna have to be like a real fight. We’re gonna have to have a really crazy, violent fight.’”
Giamatti continued:
"And I was like, ‘Okay.’ I mean, I’m almost 60 and, you know, I haven’t done much like that in a long time. But I was game for it. And I loved doing it with Sandro [Rosta] because I trusted him entirely. And it was wonderful. It was all very choreographed and very worked out.” (Continued…)
