Nathan Fillion and Noah Wyle participated in the Writers Guild Foundation’s special staged readings series on Sunday, Aug. 30, as a way to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Star Trek. And both A-list actors portrayed the iconic role of Captain James T. Kirk, which fans can still watch, but time is running out.
Star Trek fans can watch the WGF’s RetroReads presentation of Fillion portraying Captain Kirk in a staged reading of The Animated Series episode “Mudd’s Passion,” and Wyle playing the Enterprise commander in The Original Series premiere, “The Man Trap,” via Third Best TV.
For those who were unable to attend the event in Los Angeles, the WFG’s special Star Trek RetroReads is over two hours long and will cost $20 to stream. And according to Third Best TV’s official website, viewers "will have access for up to two weeks after the end of the show.”
Confirmed: The WGF Star Trek RetroReads will be available until Sunday, Sept. 13. However, be warned. If you’re expecting a serious, staged reading of “The Man Trap,” the cast of The Pitt plays the iconic horror episode of The Original Series for laughs. Fillion’s approach to “Mudd’s Passion” I can understand, but I was not prepared to see Wyle’s unusual portrayal of Captain Kirk. Neither was I ready to see some of the outlandish choices being made on stage to deliberately solicit laughter when there’s nothing funny about “The Man Trap” episode’s subject matter.
I enjoyed the staged reading of “The Man Trap” much more after the initial shock of what I perceived as disrespect by the cast of The Pitt toward Star Trek’s 60th anniversary. I’m not sure the WGF’s price of $20 is justified, but if you’re a fan of Fillion and/or Wyle, and you know what you’re getting into, I think you will appreciate the staged reading.
