Star Trek: Discovery actor was shocked the show ended after five seasons

“When we were filming season 5, we did not know that was going to be on our last season.”

Should Anthony Rapp really have been surprised?

Anthony Rapp portrayed Paul Stamets — not to be confused with the renowned, real-life mycologist of the same name — on Discovery during all five seasons. In the same sit-down, though, the actor also addressed the opportunity to at least come back and give fans closure with the extra footage shot to wrap up the series. Rapp said:

“That whole sequence that includes the flash-forward, that was really a gift that Paramount+ and CBS Studios and all the powers that be gave us to be able to at least do some kind ‘this is what happens to the people that you’ve been following for these five years.'”

I still don't think it was all that surprising that Discovery ended after season 5. While the critics enjoyed the show, which is reflected in its overall Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, not a single season was ever rated higher than 48 percent on the Popcornmeter, formerly the RT audience score. And the fifth season only managed 26 percent. That's how poorly fans thought of Discovery.

I'll logically take it a step further: the clear majority of Trekkies loathed Discovery! And, as far as I’m concerned, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is the only worthwhile original character to come out of that trainwreck of a series.

That’s saying something when you have an actor the caliber of Michelle Yeoh turning up again and again to play Philippa Georgiou and Mirror Georgiou, not to mention appearances by Anson Mount's Christopher Pike and Ethan Peck's Spock.
