6. T’Ana
Like Culber on Discovery, Dr. T’Ana struggles to be higher on the list simply because the structure of Lower Decks means that the chief medical officer won’t receive much attention. Even with her limited screentime, however, the bristly Caitian is a fun, McCoy-like addition to the Cerritos crew, as well as a great callback to Lt. M’Ress from The Animated Series.
Additionally, because Star Trek: Lower Decks is a comedy, Dr. T’Ana is able to be more eccentric and exaggerated than the doctors from more serious and dramatic Star Treks. Thus, the writers user her at times to make comments on the doctors of other series. Such good-natured critique can be helpful, lest we fall into a trap of believing these characters can do no wrong.
5. Voyager’s EMH (The Doctor)
In terms of raw medical knowledge, the EMH is arguably a more capable physician than any of the other people on this list combined. Additionally, his nature as a holographic computer program makes The Doctor unique, letting Star Trek: Voyager explore countless facets of what it means to be alive and be a person.
In many ways, the EMH is arguably used to explore these existential questions in a way that is even more interesting than a character like Data. At the same time, The Doctor becomes oversaturated over the course of Voyager. Being an interesting concept doesn’t change the fact that holographic hijinks can get old after a while.
