Deep Space Nine delivered the franchise’s definitive love letter to America’s Pastime with “Take Me Out to the Holosuite,” and it remains the perfect Star Trek companion to a brand-new MLB season. As baseball returns to our screens, there’s no better way for Trek fans to get into the spirit of Opening Day, Week, and beyond than to revisit Captain Sisko’s holosuite showdown with an all-Vulcan ballclub.

1. The episode and the setup

“Take Me Out to the Holosuite” is the fourth episode of DS9’s final season, first airing in 1998 as a late series breather in the thick of the Dominion War arc.

The premise is beautifully simple: Sisko’s old Starfleet Academy rival, the Vulcan Captain Solok, arrives at the station commanding the USS T’Kumbra and challenges him and his crew to a game of baseball in one of Quark’s holosuites.

Solok’s crew is entirely Vulcan, a group he insists is superior to humans in every respect, including athletic performance and “teamwork, courage, and sacrifice.”

The DS9 crew, by contrast, is a collection of enthusiastic amateurs, many of whom have never even heard of baseball, who have just two weeks to learn the fundamentals and become the “Niners.”
