3. A clubhouse full of characters
Like the best sports movies, “Take Me Out to the Holosuite” uses the team dynamic to spotlight everyone in the ensemble, turning the Niners into a wonderfully motley clubhouse.
Sisko wears a San Francisco Giants cap in practice, while Jake sports an Atlanta Braves cap, a detail that nods both to Major League Baseball and to actor Cirroc Lofton’s real-life connection to his uncle and former MLB outfielder Kenny Lofton.
There’s Worf, whose ultra-serious Klingon warrior ethos runs headfirst into the silliness of a 24th-century baseball uniform and pre-game pep talks.
There’s Rom, the most physically inept player on the team, whose awkward swing and clumsy fielding eventually become the emotional center of the game once Sisko realizes baseball is supposed to be about joy and unpredictability, not his vendetta.
And patrolling behind the plate is Odo, whose all-business umpiring, including the instant ejection of Sisko for touching the ump, would make any old-school MLB official proud.
