2. Pre-Federation politics and prickly humans vs. Vulcans
One of the most interesting elements on rewatch is the portrayal of human–Vulcan relations before the Federation. Vulcan Ambassador Soval and others keep arguing that humans aren’t ready for full interstellar responsibility, and Archer seethes at what he sees as decades of condescension and delay.
The pilot leans into that prickliness. Archer resents Vulcan “oversight.” T’Pol initially treats the crew with cool skepticism, and Trip bristles at Vulcan logic over human instinct. At the same time, “Broken Bow” shows why Vulcans have concerns: the Broken Bow incident, impulsive decisions, and Archer’s willingness to bend rules.
That push-pull, the sense that both sides have a point, is still compelling. It frames the eventual cooperative Federation as something earned through hard, sometimes painful negotiation rather than assumed.
