2. A mystery with an ugly answer
At first, “Civilization” looks like a standard plague episode. Locals are getting sick, Subcomander T’Pol detects strange readings, and the crew starts tracing the source of the problem. But the story slowly reveals that the illness is the result of covert industrial contamination from off-world mining operations rather than a natural disease.
The episode doesn't feel repetitive because of this twist. When Captain Archer and the others discover that Tetracyanate 622, an industrial lubricant, has tainted the water supply, the story moves from diagnosing symptoms to confronting a cover-up.
That format is still effective today because it gives the episode a tidy investigative rhythm: odd readings, local symptoms, suspicious merchants, covert technology, and ultimately the unpleasant reality under the surface.
