2. Daniels: friend or foe?
Crewman Daniels is the episode’s biggest reveal. He has apparently been serving aboard Enterprise all along, but he is a temporal agent from roughly 900 years in the future, working to stop other factions from rewriting history. His tiny cabin contains a Temporal Observatory: a remarkable piece of future technology that allows him to view intersecting timelines and identify temporal interference.
It is a great Trek premise because Daniels does not arrive as a comforting expert with a clean explanation. He needs Archer’s help, gives him only partial information, and asks him to accept a story that sounds completely impossible.
Archer’s suspicion makes perfect sense. “Cold Front” understands that a man claiming to protect the timeline is still asking a 22nd-century captain to gamble his crew’s safety on faith.
