3. Silik is more complicated than a conventional villain
Silik is back, and John Fleck makes the Suliban operative much more effective here than he was in the pilot. The viewers know he is aboard the Enterprise in disguise, pursuing the Temporal Observatory for his unidentified benefactor, but the episode refuses to make his intentions entirely straightforward.
The key wrinkle is that Silik’s sabotage of the ship’s systems was necessary to save Enterprise from destruction. Trip discovers that what appeared to be hostile interference prevented a catastrophic disaster, even as Daniels insists Silik is working for the side that wants to corrupt history.
That moral ambiguity is the episode’s smartest move: the supposed villain saves the ship, while the supposed ally withholds nearly everything. Archer cannot simply decide whom to trust based on who has harmed, or helped, his crew.
