Captain Kirk is known for beating foes who were more powerful than him, even though he wasn't the strongest physically. He was quick on his feet, could think on his feet, and was highly motivated. He typically uses Federation martial arts and street-fighting tenacity together, which helps him beat Gorn, Klingons, Romulans, and even androids — not to mention Khan!
Kirk doesn't get caught off guard very often since he is willing to defy the rules and use the environment to his advantage. His famous record in hand-to-hand and tactical fights illustrates that intelligence and creativity can be just as dangerous as physical strength.
