4. Axanar, language, and doing contact the hard way
The Axanar themselves are barely seen, but the mechanics of connecting with them are important. There’s no smooth universal translator fix; Hoshi has to work through unfamiliar syntax and audio distortions to trigger their distress signal and make basic communication possible. It’s messy and takes time.
That emphasis on language and effort makes the episode feel more grounded than many later Trek first contact stories. Enterprise isn’t yet at a stage where you can push a button and instantly talk to anyone; someone has to sweat the details, and that someone is Hoshi.
In 2026, when we’re surrounded by debates about translation tech and miscommunication across cultures, watching a story that respects the difficulty of “Hello, we’re trying to help” is surprisingly satisfying.
