4. Early interspecies protocol and Archer’s diplomatic juggling
Once the pregnancy is discovered, the Enterprise has to find the Xyrillians again while also dealing with an annoyed Klingon ship that has its own history with them. Archer ends up mediating between the Klingons and Xyrillians, persuading the former not to destroy the cloaked vessel in exchange for tech assistance that can improve Klingon targeting.
That plot may be light, but it does two important things. First, it shows Archer functioning as a diplomat under bizarre circumstances (“Your engineer is pregnant, please don’t blow up the people who did it”).
Second, it implicitly launches Starfleet’s need for interspecies protocols: guidelines on what counts as sexual contact, how to handle unexpected physiological consequences, and what assistance expectations look like when something goes wrong.
