4. Archer’s dilemma: relocate or respect?
Once the truth is clear, Archer faces a messy choice. Radiation levels on the surface mean the Novans can’t safely stay where they are long‑term.
However, asking them to uproot and move to a new area, or even back toward human space, means dismantling two generations of self‑definition. They don’t see themselves as colonists who lost contact; they see themselves as a separate people who survived “Earth’s” cruelty.
Archer doesn’t have a perfect solution. He and Subcommander T’Pol propose relocating the Novans to a safer region of the planet rather than dragging them back to Earth, balancing medical necessity with respect for their desire to remain independent.
It’s a compromise that sits nicely in the pre‑Prime‑Directive era: Starfleet isn’t yet bound by strict non‑interference, but Enterprise is already trying to weigh intervention against autonomy.
