3. Shadows over paradise: Deep Space Nine

TNG made the Federation better, while Deep Space Nine showed how far it could go. The crew was stationed at a crossroads of conflict and politics, where they had to deal with the darker price of peace. The Dominion War and moral concessions undermined the Federation's perfect reputation.

Benjamin Sisko often mixed up what was necessary and what was right, which made people wonder if paradise could survive a danger to its existence. Realism made it more believable, yet realism strengthened its credibility. DS9 showed that ideals endure not by denying imperfection but by confronting it. The Federation’s optimism became tempered, not lost.
