Finally, fans receive a new update about John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s Trek.
Yes, the new Star Trek film’s writer and directing team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have officially compared the script for their movie to two iconic films: Training Day and Crimson Tide. The creative force behind 2023’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves talked more about the evolving screenplay during an interview published today (Monday, Sept. 1).
“Two movies we cite as comps for what we’re hoping to do are Training Day and Crimson Tide,” Goldstein said during the sit-down with Inverse. Meanwhile, Daley went into much greater detail about their screenplay for the future Star Trek movie by saying: “I would say it's really kind of a look at the institution of Starfleet and any institution as a whole that has existed for a long time and what that does.”
Daley, who also co-wrote the script with Goldstein for Sony and Marvel’s immensely popular Spider-Man: Homcoming starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, continued by discussing their creative approach toward Starfleet by saying:
“ I think the portrayal of Starfleet and the people that work within it have always been generally idealized versions of what the future could be. And while this [screenplay] isn’t a cynical or nihilistic take on it, I think it does acknowledge that there are some bad apples in every institution that can have a strong voice and can really make an impact on that institution and everything it stands for.”
Personally, I’m ecstatic to learn more about Goldstein and Daley’s Star Trek right now, especially since it’s being compared to one of my favorite Denzel Washington films: Training Day. The problem fans might have, though, is the fact that they might be staring down the barrel of a phaser rifle and at yet another genre piece, which much of the fandom is currently in an uproar about, in regard to how Strange New Worlds season 4 is being handled.
