The big-screen Trek is set “a little further in the future than we've been before.”
Plenty of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 news is being cranked out during the streaming series’ stellar press tour. However, it’s also that special time of year many superhero and science fiction fans look forward to every summer: San Diego Comic-Con. And, as it turns out, a bit of information has finally been divulged by the upcoming Star Trek film’s directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.
Best known for writing and directing the 2023 blockbuster Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and co-writing the screenplay for Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), the duo was on hand at this year’s SDCC. And they revealed to Collider that their Star Trek movie will be set “a little further in the future than we’ve been before.”
As a lifelong Trekkie, I wonder just how far ahead of Star Trek: Discovery and Starfleet Academy — both taking place in the 32nd century — the new big-screen adventure will explore.
“I think we can say the script is in progress, and that we’re very excited about it,” Daley told those attending the SDCC Hall H directing panel (per TrekMovie.com). “And I think people will be surprised. I really can’t say anything else, other than that.”
Goldstein added: “I think we’ve said in the past, and it’s been reported, that it won’t be the characters that you’ve seen previously in your Star Trek movies. So, there’ll be a new sort of take on that, and I think it’ll probably be a little further into the future than we’ve been before.”
At this point, though, the creatives are still penning the screenplay, so don’t expect any news about pre-production, let alone a teaser poster and/or trailer, to drop anytime over the weekend at SDCC this year.
Assuming the still-to-be finalized Paramount Skydance Corporation merger with Warner Bros. Discovery doesn’t throw a Type 2 phaser into the warp-engine, there are two other Star Trek films being developed — both of which are being produced by J.J. Abrams.
One, like Goldstein and Daley’s film will focus on new characters and it is being directed by Andor’s Toby Haynes and written by Seth Grahame Smith.
And while many have speculated that Steve Yockey’s Star Trek is dead, which is also being produced by Abrams, Deadline still reported on the project just last August.
Meanwhile, Variety wrote in November: “The studio has moved on from the idea of bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the ensemble from the J.J. Abrams reboot.”
Regardless of if there are two or three Treks films on the horizon, I’m excited the franchise is returning to the big screen. However, I’m also worried parts of the fandom won’t respond positively to a "new" project given the reception Star Trek: Discovery and Starfleet Academy received in recent years.
