A blockbuster that still feels bold
First Contact opened at the top of the box office after its debut on November 22, 1996, and made $150 million dollars worldwide, making it the most commercially successful of The Next Generation films. It was also the first Star Trek film to exclusively feature the TNG cast and the first feature film directed by Jonathan Frakes.
Even at the time of its debut, First Contact was regarded as one of the greatest Trek films by critics like Roger Ebert, who praised the film's blend of strong sci-fi spectacle and character-driven storytelling.
That balance still feels amazingly contemporary thirty years later: this movie manages to pull off both a Borg invasion and a zero-G hull walk while also pausing for contemplative discussions about humanity's future.
