Picard’s darkest, most human hour
What’s so great about First Contact is the way it connects on a personal level to Jean-Luc Picard. Nightmares, survivor’s guilt, and barely contained rage bubble to the surface as he faces the Borg again. And Patrick Stewart takes the opportunity to bring Picard to emotional extremes rarely seen on TNG.
The core of the film is the conflict between Picard’s desire for revenge and his duty as a captain, beautifully exemplified in his showdown with Lily Sloane, who makes him face the boundary he is about to cross.
That arc is great crackling drama, but it also ensures that the film’s action is always rooted in character, which is a big part of why the movie hasn’t aged into yet another effects-driven 90s blockbuster.
