2. Kira Nerys, Deep Space Nine

Kira Nerys was a tough character to root for at first. It was natural she’d have a chip on her shoulder as she’d spent her life fighting against Cardassian occupation and was not happy with the Federation stepping in. As DS9 went on, Kira became more respectful of Benjamin Sisko and stepped up as the first officer for the station, a very difficult job.

As an outsider to the Federation, Kira had a different view of their policies and was not as hamstrung by their rules. She was willing to be on the front lines of a fight, and Sisko always knew the station was in good hands with Kira commanding for him. Her eventual taking over DS9 made sense as Kira’s strength and attitude made for a feisty yet very fine first officer for this installment.
