Who else could top the list? Spock was the initial first officer for the franchise and has remained the most iconic. Being a Vulcan, he’s the voice of logic and reason on the Enterprise, able to keep his cool even under the worst emergencies, and those clipped tones help him maintain command. That alone would earn him top marks as a first officer.

However, his half-human side gives Spock some empathy and unlike other Vulcans (and as much as he’ll deny it), he can go with his gut at times, which is needed. He’s willing to call out Captain Kirk going too far or breaking the rules, which Kirk respects. He has the trust of the rest of the crew and his time as a captain proved he could lead well. Plus, Leonard Nimoy’s magnificent performance crafted an iconic character setting the tone for every first officer to follow.
