An abandoned station should be an easy assignment for Miles O’Brien.

However, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's “Empok Nor” turns a routine salvage mission into a fight for survival. O’Brien and his team arrive to recover replacement parts from a Cardassian station resembling DS9, only to lose their escape route and face a trusted ally who becomes increasingly dangerous.

Garak initially helps the team navigate the station’s defenses, drawing on his knowledge of Cardassian technology. Exposure to a psychotropic compound turns his pursuit of the station’s attackers into a threat against his own companions.

Surviving “Empok Nor” requires O’Brien to recognize when an ally has become an enemy, protect Nog, and outthink an opponent determined to provoke a violent confrontation. The chief’s engineering skills provide a way out, but victory comes at a potentially lethal cost.

1. Keep the mission from becoming a hunt

O’Brien brings engineers and security personnel to recover equipment, not pursue an enemy. The discovery of occupied stasis chambers changes the assignment, and the destruction of the runabout removes the obvious escape route. The deaths of Stolzoff,  Pechetti, and Boq'ta establish that the station’s remaining occupants are hunting the visitors.

Garak pursues the Cardassian attackers while O’Brien concentrates on establishing a distress signal and restoring contact with DS9. Both recognize the immediate danger, but their priorities diverge: Garak wants to eliminate the hunters, while O’Brien needs to get his people home.

Killing an attacker does not guarantee an escape. Communications still need repairing, equipment must be recovered, and the surviving team members remain vulnerable. Garak’s growing enthusiasm for the pursuit threatens to turn violence into the mission itself.

O’Brien’s leadership cannot erase the casualties, but keeping extraction as the objective gives the remaining work a purpose. Survival means getting the team out, not simply gaining control of the corridors.
