2. Understand why T’Pol’s discipline cannot save her
The situation aboard the Seleya is especially frightening for T’Pol. She once served on the cruiser, meaning some of the Vulcans attacking the away team are former colleagues. Watching familiar faces become violent strangers is unsettling enough, but the possibility that she could suffer the same fate makes the experience even worse.
At first, T’Pol tries to maintain her composure. As her symptoms worsen, however, she grows suspicious of Archer and Reed. The people she normally trusts begin to look like enemies, and their attempts to help her only fuel her paranoia.
Dr. Phlox eventually identifies trellium-D exposure as the cause. The substance acts as a neurotoxin in Vulcans, interfering with their ability to suppress their emotions. Fear, anger, and suspicion begin taking over, leaving T’Pol unable to rely on the mental discipline that has guided her throughout her life.
That's what makes her situation so unsettling. T’Pol isn't simply having trouble keeping her temper in check. The poisoning undermines the very foundation of her Vulcan identity, leaving her unable to trust even her own judgment. All the meditation and self-control in the world can't simply make the toxin disappear.
