5. The cure does not make Barclay the culprit
Crusher later identifies her treatment of Barclay’s Urodelan flu as the outbreak’s trigger. When Barclay asks whether the disaster was his fault, Crusher accepts responsibility for the intervention. Seeking medical care was not the mistake that endangered the ship.
The distinction matters after an episode that repeatedly uses Barclay’s anxiety for humor. Nervousness did not activate the virus, and worrying about symptoms did not cause the transformations. The unexpected reaction followed a treatment intended to help him.
Recovery also cannot erase every consequence. The de-evolved Riker appears to have already killed Ensign Dern on the bridge, and restoring the surviving crew does not reverse that loss. The Enterprise’s return to normal represents a rescue from catastrophe, not proof that the catastrophe was harmless.
