5. Break the mechanism, not merely the performance

Sylvia’s demand for Korob’s wand confirms its importance. Sylvia’s own mechanism is simpler and less powerful, making the recovered transmuter especially valuable. The captor who seemed able to reshape everything now needs something Kirk holds.

Kirk refuses to return it despite Sylvia’s threats. Smashing the crystal headpiece off the top of the wand ends the castle, releases the controlled officers, and exposes the beings beneath their assumed forms. The rescue succeeds because the source of their advantage proves physically destructible.

The final revelation complicates the victory. Sylvia and Korob appear as small, vulnerable creatures unable to survive without the transmuter. Destroying the device saves the landing parties but also ends the lives of their captors, including the one who helped them escape.

McCoy calls the vanished environment an illusion. Kirk answers with the consequence the disappearing castle cannot reverse: “Jackson is dead.” The distinction prevents the ending from dismissing the ordeal as an elaborate prank.
