Roddenberry shows off an original script that is over 60 years old, among other cool collectibles.
Star Trek’s 60th anniversary this fall continues to approach at warp speed, and what better way for fans to celebrate than by taking a behind-the-scenes look at some unbelievable memorabilia collected by Rod Roddenberry. The son of legendary Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry, is hosting a new streaming series online called Inside the Roddenberry Archive and giving fans a glimpse of some jaw-dropping collectibles.
In the exclusive first-look video, which fans can watch below (per BEAM by Roddenberry), Rod shares some of the incredible items he has collected over the years. And for my money, it doesn’t get better than the script from the original Star Trek pilot “The Cage.” Yes, Roddenberry has the authentic teleplay, which is clearly titled “The Menagerie,” that his mother, Majel Barrett, read and studied from in the mid-1960s.
For those newcomers to the fandom, Barrett portrayed Number One in the first Star Trek pilot, which eventually aired on television over 20 years after it was produced by NBC. Personally, that beautiful but worn script is one of the holy grails of Trek collectibles, and I love that Roddenberry is pulling back the curtain and giving fans a chance to see items from his immense collection.
I also love how that piece of concept art from Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), which features Lt. Ilia (Persis Khambatta), spoke to Roddenberry just as other Trek collectibles often spark memories in Trekkies of all ages.
And I can’t encourage everyone enough to check out episode 1 of Inside the Roddenberry Archive, which features the original 33-inch USS Enterprise model from “The Cage” and several guest spots on The Original Series — not to be confused with the 11-foot vessel docked at the Smithsonian.
