Star Trek actor joins Chastain and Ben Stiller in upcoming Apple TV limited series.
Yesterday, Feb. 2, was a big day for Jessica Chastain, as far as teaming up with Star Trek talent is concerned. First, on Groundhog Day, it was announced that the Oscar-winning actress would be teaming up with Chris Pine for the #MeToo film adaptation of This Is Pleasure. And then later came the news that the Kelvin Timeline’s own Mr. Sulu, John Cho, was boarding Chastain and Ben Stiller’s Apple TV limited series, The Off Weeks. The show’s synopsis reads as follows (per Variety):
“When divorce throws writing professor Gus Adler’s (Stiller) life into chaos, he struggles to hold things together during ‘on weeks’ when he has custody of his kids. But in his ‘off weeks,’ he’s falling dangerously in love with Stella West (Chastain), a mysterious woman whose arrival puts Gus’ on-week duties and off-weeks ambitions on a fatal collision course.”
The other big name slated to appear in the Stiller and Chastain-led romantic drama is none other than Richard Gere.
True, many Trekkies are likely to gravitate toward The Off Weeks just to see Cho. However, as much as I enjoy his acting abilities, particularly in bringing Mr. Sulu to life in the three Star Trek Kelvin movies, this TV series should be highly successful, regardless of his presence, given that Stiller, Chastain, and Gere are all starring in the project.
Frankly, I’d rather have seen a news headline announcing Cho’s return as Hikaru Sulu in a fourth Star Trek film, but it seems that starship as sailed. After all, nearly 10 years have passed since Cho last appeared as the USS Enterprise helmsman on the big screen in Star Trek Beyond (2026).
At the time of this writing, Cho’s character in The Off Weeks has not been revealed, nor has an official release date been assigned to the Apple TV limited series.
