Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's penultimate episode, "300th Night," was as wild and emotional as fans expected it to be. After so long apart, Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta) finally reunited with his mother, Anisha (Tatiana Maslany), years after being separated by future Chancellor Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter).
Jonathan Frakes, The Next Generation legend who directed the episode, addressed how vital the mother-son reunion was and the one key cast member needed to make it work. Frakes said in an interview via TrekMovie.com:
"I had to focus on the mother and son reunification. Make that resonate, having only ever seen them together when he was a baby essentially, and very little of Tatiana [Maslany] was even in the pilot. So she was my secret weapon. I was a huge fan of her, still am, obviously, and even more so having worked with her."
The story ended in episode 10, "Rubincon," which was directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. Anisha made peace with Ake over what happened long ago, and Caleb's mother recognized her son found a place where he belonged with people who loved him.
Starfleet Academy wrapped filming on season 2 already, but Maslany won’t be in it. However, there’s a chance she could return for a future season, and hopefully it will happen. We’ve only scratched the surface of Anisha’s character, and it’s obvious her years on the run from both the Federation and various crime gangs hardened her, as she did anything it took to survive.
Maslany was a fine choice for the role, even with her limited screen time. She made Anisha shine during her appearances, showing her amazing depth and skills as an actress. Hopefully, she’ll get more opportunities to show that, as it’d be a waste not to use Maslany more in the future.
